Torque Like This Makes My Head Spin.

Sit down, take a deep breath, and take a good look at one of the most revolutionary scientific breakthroughs from Everspin, has just happened in the world of memory.

Spin Torque MRAM (Magnetic Random Access Memory).

It uses electron “spin” to store data in a magnetic, rather than electronic state. This will change the architecture of memory.

Literally.

I shall explain.

Just when the computer industry is starting to move away from conventional hard drives and into flash based SSD hard drives, the next revolution (pardon the pun) is already upon us, leaving SSDs in the dust.

First, I will explain what it is, and then why it is so important.

Spin Torque Magneto resistive Memory is high performance (fast) with ultra low latency (This means you don’t have to wait long for it.) In fact, it is the fastest non-volatile memory with unlimited endurance: 1600 million transfers per second per i/o with a bandwidth of 2.3 GBytes per second!

This means it is smoking fast (up to 500x faster), very efficient and low power usage, and this memory can’t lose data if power fails. This makes it perfect for everything from desktops to servers, mobile devices, tablets, and laptops. Everspin’s proprietary Spin-Torque technology uses a spin-polarized current for switching. Data is stored as a magnetic state, versus an electronic charge, providing a non-volatile memory bit that does not suffer wear-out or data loss and retention issues associated with Flash technology.

Why is this is so incredible? What does it mean for you?

This means that in just a few years, computers will be much faster, use less power, and most importantly for you, provide more performance. Your data will also be crash proof if power fails or is turned off.

At this time, the very first prototype chips are in the hands of a very select few memory and hard drive companies for evaluation and development, but it won’t be long before Spin Torque MRAM is a name you will be seeing everywhere.
